Out of the Journal onto the Page: Taking Your Writing Seriously

Course Instructor:  Aralee Strange

6 weeks, one 2 hour class per week

September 16 - October 21, Thursdays, 10 AM to 12 PM

Members - $140; Non-members - $150

Course Synopsis:  Beginning to Intermediate writers. This course is designed for those who wish to raise the bar on their writing, who wants to write more than daily observations of life.  We will explore how to look for what is valuable in one's journal, what might lend itself to something more than personal observations - poetry, stories, memoirs (per students' interests). We will move from journal writing to using a Notebook to expand and explore one's observations to getting the final idea on the page, standing alone on its own merits.

Students will bring their personal journals, a new notebook and something to write with to every class.

What is a poem, and where does it come from?

Instructor:  Aralee Strange

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate writers

6 weeks, one 2 hour class per week + 1 private meeting per student with instructor, date/time to be determined

September 17 - October 22, Fridays 1-3 PM

Course Fee: Members, $150; non-Members, $160

We will explore the difference between poetry and prose, where to look for inspiration in new experiences, sights, and sounds, how to break down the perceived barrier between ordinary speech and poetry, how to find the music in language, how to find poetry in the details of everyday life.  How does language change inside a poem? What's the difference between prose and poetry? How do you search for and find your voice?   Prepare to write every day, to share what you've written with others, to revise and polish a poem.

Students will bring a new notebook and something to write with.  Instructor will provide other materials (i.e., poems, recordings, handouts, etc.). There will be a public reading of the work at the end of this course.
