Poster Printing with Wood Type

Instructor: Margot Ecke

Day & Time: Saturday, 2pm to 5pm

Length of Class: 3 Hours

Class Fee: Adult OCAF Members - $50 per Adult
                  Adult Non-members - $60 per Adult

Materials Fee: $5 per person (Payable at beginning of class)

Class Description: Have you ever wanted to print your own posters? Are you interested in learning about letter press printing and wood type? This family friendly class encourages students to create their own posters, which they will design using wood type and print on old-fashioned letterpress sign poster. Ink and paper will be provided and each participant will leave with multiple printed posters. Instructor will also give a brief introduciton to the history of letterpress poster printing.

Margot Ecke is the owner of Smokey Road Press. She received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and her BFA from Cornell University. She received a Professional Printing Certificate from the Tamarind Institute at the University of New Mexico and completed her training by earning her Diploma in Bookbinding at the North Bennett Street School in Boston. Margot was the Victor Hammer Fellow in the Book Arts at Wells College in Aurora, New York from 2004-2006, and has taught workshops at the Penland School of Crafts, the Atlanta Printmakers Studio, the North Bennet Street School and the Ink Shop. She was an Assistant Professor of Book Arts and Printmaking at the University of Georgia from 2006-2009. Her work is exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Coptic Bookbinding

Instructor: Margot Ecke

Suggested - Glue brush, scissors, ruler, bone folder (instructor has extra if students do not have these items)

Class Description: In this one day class, bookbinder Margot Ecke will teach students how to construct a Coptic bound book. Coptic structures are the earliest known examples of books with folded pages and date from as early as the 4th century. They are excellent books for sketching and journal writing because they open flat. The structure itself is very beautiful, with exposed linked stitching along the spine. Students will become familiar with the vocabulary, tools, materials and techniques associated with traditional bookbinding and leave with a love of binding as well as a strong foundation for more advanced learning.

The Wee Box

Student Materials List: Pencil, Scissors, Notepad, Small glue brush, Large glue brush, Metal ruler (no cork back), Square (metal or plastic / triangle or 90°)

Class Description: In this one day workshop, bookbinder Margot Ecke will teach students how to make a Wee Box. The Wee Box is the perfect introduction to the world of custom box construction and this extra small yet very precise structure will allow students an opportunity to understand how customized boxes are made. The class will also cover tools and materials in depth.

Your hand-made Wee Box will provide a wonderful way to display that small treasure you otherwise keep tucked away in some safe place or will stand-alone as a work-of-art all on its own. Students are encouraged to bring an item, roughly the size of a golf ball, they would like to store in their box. Each student will leave with a completed customized box and enough materials to make another box at home.

Introduction to Bookbinding

Class Description:This four session course teaches students the basic stitches needed to construct a variety of book structures.  We will cover accordion and maze books, stab bindings, Coptic books and more. Students will become familiar with the vocabulary, tools, materials and techniques associated with traditional bookbinding and leave with a love of binding as well as a strong foundation for more advanced learning.
